WHY SIDE SKILL IS YOUR SECRET WEAPON
Choosing to study Law has been one of the most defining decisions of my life. I know that sounds unconventional; I often hear my coursemates say they wouldn't choose this path again if given the chance, usually citing the intense demand on one’s time and effort.
However, I genuinely enjoy the process.
In the legal world, we are often told to "pick a lane and stay in it." While focus is important, I’ve recently learned that the most successful careers are not built on a single degree. They are built at the intersection of your unique skills.
As a Law Student and a Narrative Strategist, I once feared that being a "creative" specifically an intentional storyteller would make me look less serious about my career. I was wrong. Here is why you should never hide your creativity, especially as a legal professional.
1. Creativity is a Legal Asset
My background as an English specialist and storyteller allows me to lean into the narrative of cases and principles. It helps me understand the "why
" and the "mind of the law" beyond the dry text of a volume. This is essentially critical thinking in action. Law is the architecture of stories; by leaning into the narrative, I am better equipped to build a compelling argument.
2. Your "Side Skill" is a Filter
Whether you are a designer, an organizer, a writer, or a strategist, your secondary skills act as filters. They help you see solutions that others miss.
The Designer’s Filter (Clarity): You don’t need to be a graphic designer to apply this. It’s about asking: "Is this readable?" A designer’s filter strips away the noise and jargon. When you present work with a clear hierarchy and structure, you make it easy for others to say "yes" to your ideas.
The Strategist’s Filter (Impact): This is about understanding the "why" before the "how." A strategist filters for the end goal. Before starting a task, ask: "Does this move the needle toward the objective?" Strategy is the art of knowing what to ignore so you can focus on the moves that actually change the game.
The Writer’s Filter (Connection): Words are the architecture of influence. This filter forces you to ask: "Is this compelling?" Whether it’s a legal brief or a brand pitch, if you cannot tell a clear story, your logic will be lost. Use your words to bridge the gap between "fact" and "feeling."
3. Communication is Your Currency
You can be the most brilliant legal mind in the room, but if you cannot communicate your logic clearly, your value is capped. Every law student is expected to communicate effectively, whether they pursue litigation or not.
There is a common trait among lawyers to speak technically often to sound logical. However, when we speak so technically that we lose our audience, we have failed. What is the essence of communication if the other person cannot understand your point within a minute? Communicators are responsible for the clarity of their message.
Closing Note
Don’t just aim to be a lawyer; aim to be a legal professional with a specialized toolkit. Use your writing to clarify, your strategy to plan, and your degree to advocate. Your "side" skill isn’t a distraction, it’s your signature.
What is one skill you’re bringing into your career that has nothing to do with your degree?
